Jenny's Story
I've been volunteering for MDF since the charity began in the early 80s. Our original office in Richmond was very small, but things have evolved since then and we have more services, staff and volunteers. Our members journal Pendulum has become much more professional and developed over the years with interesting articles and features relating to bipolar.
I also volunteer for the Foundling museum in London as a room steward, talking to people face to face giving people information. It's a joy to work there and it's great to have outside interests.
During my time at MDF I've met Spike Milligan at our 10th anniversary which was a terrific experience. I enjoy working with the other volunteers here, who like myself live with bipolar. In the future I'd like to see more research into bipolar disorder and MDF has been part of that since I started volunteering. At the moment I'm reviewing the list of publications we have for sale, looking at ways that we have the latest information available for people to read.
I honestly think that everyone with bipolar should have the chance to go to our self help groups, which happen all over the UK. There may also be the opportunity to go on our self management training courses, which is a 3 day course designed to give you a thorough understanding of bipolar.
The main thing I would say is if you've just been diagnosed find out as much as you can, try and find a self help group close to where you are and join MDF.
Thank you for reading my story.
