Gary's Story
I have been volunteering for MDF The Bipolar Organisation since October 2005, working with 5 other volunteers, matching the number of staff. Together we identify with people who have bipolar by answering telephone calls and providing advice, as well as sending out information packs and supporting the team.
18 years ago my life was very different. I was studying a HND at university, but struggling badly with the stress of student life. I did finish my course and started full time work, but after a year I became ill, worse than the first time. I was diagnosed with bipolar which was frightening for me. I then went through the worst time in my life.
With the help of MDF things began to improve. I became involved with the local Core Arts Project for 8 years and sold some paintings, which has boosted my confidence and put me back on the road to a full time job.
MDF has helped get my life back on track. Going to my local self help group meetings and subsequently getting a place on an MDF self-management training course had a huge impact on my life. I gradually learned new ways of coping, changed some of my lifestyle, and learned from others in a similar position to myself.
I do not know where I would be now without the support of the group and the encouragement and hope that it gave me. I now co-facilitate the same group, and hope that by doing so, I am helping others who may be struggling with coming to terms with bipolar disorder.
It costs us £500 to support members to set up a new self help group. We appreciate that you may be on a low income and not in a position to to make a gift, but any donation, no matter how small, will be greatly appreciated and put to good use.
